"Because I like to move around so much, the international nature of RTL Group really attracts me."

Peter Cassidy

Vice President, Participation TV, FremantleMedia - London

“I joined RTL Group in January 2001. I was working for an international bank in Luxembourg and read about a job in the Corporate Communications department at the RTL Group Corporate Centre in Luxembourg.

My first impressions? Big and complicated. It took me quite a while to get my head around the structure of the company, the politics, and the interaction between the operating companies and HQ. But I liked the fact that so many of my colleagues in the Corporate Centre were also expats, working faraway from 'home'. I started out working in the Press Office preparing press releases and presentations. After a few months, Didier Bellens, the CEO at the time asked me to be his Executive Assistant. I did this for a couple of years and then moved to RTL Nederland where I was first responsible for Business Development and then their Telco Media business. In September 2006 I moved to FremantleMedia in London to look after their Participation TV business across Europe.

To young executives I would say:
- Try to come into contact with as many colleagues as possible outside your own company.
- Don't be scared by having to work in a foreign language - it takes time but it is possible.
- Remember that being one of the only foreigners in a company is not a disadvantage, its an advantage
- If you're bored or unfulfilled doing what you do, don't be afraid to tell your boss

What I like most about RTL Group? Because I like to move around so much, the international nature of RTL Group really attracts me. The high profile of company is also an asset - let's just say it makes conversation at dinner parties a little easier than if you worked for an accountancy firm. And last but not least, there are a lot of genuinely nice people working for this Group, many of whom have become good friends.”
