Asian sheepshead wrasse Koji Nakamura RTL Radio partner of magnificent Océans Jacques Perrin’s latest film is an ode to the ocean world that required four years of shooting and three crews. It was released in cinemas in France on 27 January in partnership with RTL Radio France and was instantly a huge success, with 104,000 viewers on opening day.

After Himalaya and Le Peuple migrateur, and using entirely new filming techniques, Jacques Perrin takes audiences from the Arctic ice floes to the tropics, to the heart of the oceans and its storms to show audiences known, little known and completely unknown marine creatures. Océans examines the imprint man is leaving on the natural world, asking the question: “What is the ocean?” The reply comes through images and emotion.

New filming techniques

After France, Germany: Last October, Universum Filme announced that Unsere Ozeane was to be released in Germany on 25 February 2010 - distributed by Universum Film. In a press release this week, Universum Film emphasizes the success of Jacques Perrin’s film in France, which, after just one week in cinemas, stands far ahead of other documentary films of the same vein. Released on Wednesday 27 January, it attracted 104,000 viewers on the first day, and by the end of the weekend 636,385 people had seen the film. Universum Film underlines in its press release that this is the second best release of all time for a documentary (just behind the documentary This Is It about Michael Jackson) and that it succeeded in drawing twice as many viewers as the latest George Clooney comedy Up in the Air, which was released in cinemas at the same time. Océans is also a huge success in Japan (released 22 January 2010), where it has already been seen by 830,837 viewers.
