The new film from Academy Award winning director Caroline Link is based on the bestselling novel by German entertainer Hape Kerkeling. The film immediately catapulted to the top of the German Movie Chart.

“These fantastic viewer ratings are a great gift for UFA: They reflect the enthusiasm of our audience for the great performance of Caroline Link and her entire team – as the producers, we have been able to feel this sense of enthusiasm shown towards the film for many months,” says UFA Producers Sebastian Werninger and Nico Hofman in a joint statement.
The film is set in the year 1972 in the Ruhr Region, where the chubby nine-year-old Hans-Peter grew up in the security of his jovial and fun-loving family. He practiced his talent in making others laugh every day in his aunt Änne’s grocery shop, but not all things were rosy. A dark shadow begins to fall on the boy’s everyday life when his mother becomes increasingly depressed after surgery. For Hans-Peter this was motivation to perfect his talent as a comedian.

After the success of I’m Off Then, the production companies UFA Fiction and Feine Film in co-production with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany adapted a bestseller by Hape Kerkeling for the second time. The executive producers of the new movie are Sebastian Werninger, Nico Hofmann (UFA), Hermann Florin (Feine Filme), and Tobias Timme.
